7 Ways to Hit Your Protein Goals on a GLP-1 (and Protect Your Hair)

When your appetite drops on a GLP-1, protein is usually the first thing to slip. Low protein intake, rapid weight loss, and general under-eating are some of the most common contributors to shedding during medical weight loss. The good news is that you can often make a pretty big impact through food.
The biggest thing here is that you'll want to prioritize nutrient dense, low volume foods to maximize your appetite, while its still there.
So, here's how:
1. Start with protein at every meal
Eat the protein and fiber rich foods on your plate, while your appetite is still there. The rest of the meal (and beverages) come next.
2. Go for small, frequent, protein-dense options
Big meals can feel really difficult on a GLP-1. Think 4 to 5 mini meals or snacks instead of 3 large ones.
3. Keep easy “no-cook” proteins on hand
Cottage cheese
Hard-boiled eggs
Tuna or salmon pouches
Rotisserie chicken
Edamame
4. Sip your protein when chewing feels like too much.
Protein shakes, kefir, and blended smoothies are easier to get down on low-appetite days.
5. Add protein to what you’re already eating.
Stir protein powder or dairy/soy milk into your morning coffee
Add beans or lentils to soups
Top oatmeal with nut butter and hemp seeds
Add blended cottage cheese to scrambled eggs
6. Don’t skip the supporting nutrients.
Protein is the foundation, but iron, zinc, B12, vitamin D, and enough total calories all matter for the hair growth cycle. Eating enough overall is just as important as protein.
7. Find your personal target.
General guidance for people losing weight on a GLP-1 often sits well above the standard minimum at 1.2-1.6 g/kg of body weight, per this joint consensus statement. Your ideal number depends on your size, activity, health history, and medications. This is where individualized guidance really pays off.
